Fin whales and bald eagles.

Good evening everyone.  We had another great day on the Bay out of St. Andrews spending time with finback whales on both departures.

We also saw LOTS of eagles today, over 25 on our morning trip and this afternoon we actually saw an adult eagle eating a seal pup that had died and the body got stuck in the intertidal zone.

Fin whales and finally...no fog!

Well, good evening everyone, we had our first day with great weather in what seems like a very long time.  It was calm and clear so we decided to take a run offshore to see what we could find.  We ran out to South Wolf and then to the east, all the way around Eastern Wolf but had no luck with finding any whales offshore.  We knew there were finbacks inshore and we knew they were being difficult to watch, so it worked that we waited and let the tide flood for about an hour as we searched other areas.  When we arrived with the fin whales we got some incredible looks, there were 5 in total, 2 pairs and a single.

This video I took today, the fins were so close to the boat you can't even see them in the frame but you can hear and see the blow.

Finbacks and Fog

Good evening everyone,

We had another 2 great trips out there on the Bay of Fundy.  It was great to get out there this morning on an ebb tide and find out where the fin whales were.  Whale can move around a lot and depending on the tide they can be found in very different areas (or sometimes not at all).  We have been spending time with fin whales over the past few days on a strong flood tide but this morning we were mid-ebb and we found 4 finbacks just inside the Horse.  They didn't seem to be feeding but just travelling around in the area.

We also got to watch a herring weir be seined, or harvested.  Weirs are an inshore fishery for herring (in our part of Bay).  To learn more about weirs click HERE

This afternoon we had some fog to deal with but we lucked out...and found a fin whale in a small clear pocket and what a pleasure this fin whale was to watch.  Short dives and not travelling far at all.  We got some wonderful looks at this familiar whale.

Fin whales, Fin whales, swimming in the ocean....

Good morning everyone, we had 2 great trips yesterday, both on the flood tide and both were spent with 6-8 feeding fin whales off Bliss.  We had 2 great groups of passengers who dealt with the strong SW wind and choppy seas wonderfully.

FINtastic Flood Tide Fin Whales

Good morning everyone.  We had a great on the water yesterday with a morning and an afternoon departure.  It never ceases to amaze me how different each and every day....and trip...is out on the Bay of Fundy.

In the morning we found at least 6 fin whales feeding aggressively off Bliss Island on the flood tide, these whales were no where to be found the day before on the same time of the tide.  There were also a large number (50+) northern gannets feeding in the same area as well.  I seem to have taken a lot more photos of gannets than whales yesterday morning....

The afternoon trip was the ebb tide and it was whole different story out there....but with patience and some extra time spent we managed to get some great looks at 2 minke whales, including Slice and a large fin whale doing some long dives.

Unfortunately we had to cancel out offshore humpback/right whale trip due to a forecast of high winds and low visibility.  I will post if we are able to reschedule.

Fin Whales and Patience

Good evening everyone,

We had two great trips today with great sightings of fin whales and minkes on both departures.  This morning took a lot more patience than the afternoon as all of the whales seemed to be doing very long dives on the flood tide.  This afternoon we got looks at 4 different fin whales, one offshore in the strong SW chop and 3-4 more in the protection of the Islands than showed up as the tide continued to ebb.

A Finback and Slice, a great September afternoon

Good evening everyone, what a beautiful afternoon it was on the water, especially after the rain we had this morning!  We started our trip off with a minke whale off Green's Point, and it was Slice.  We spent some time there before making our way out to search for fin whales.  We had to head our further than expected but we were successful and we found one large finback a mile or so off South Wolf.

We also stopped in the Islands on the way home and had a wonderful look at a bald eagle on an abandoned herring weir off Spruce Island.

Finbacks and September Southwest

Good evening everyone, we had a wonderful trip this afternoon which started inshore with 2 fin whales

We then took a run offshore but with the strong SW we really didn't search all that far and the we made our way back into the protection of the Islands and inside Head Harbour Passage where we found a young minke whale.  We also saw at least 15 bald eagles along the Campobello shoreline.

We then stopped again with the finbacks before making our way to St. Andrews.

Right Whale Trip Update

So we are only a week away from our scheduled North Atlantic right whale trip on September 8th at 7:30am....so here's the thing.....the NEAq right whale research team has documented very few right whales in the Bay of Fundy so it's not realistic for us to to a "right whale trip" but if the weather is appropriate and we can get ~35 miles out, past Grand Manan we want it to be a HUMPBACK trip!! If you have already made a reservation please call the office to confirm/cancel (1-877-688-2600) and if you are interested there are still a few spots available.

A FINtastic start to the long weekend

Good evening everyone, we had a great start to the long weekend spending time on all three trips with both minkes and finbacks

There were also lots of harbour porpoise around, seal as well and plenty of seabirds including some large groups of northern gannets.
